YWCA Applauds SCOTUS Decision
Protection and full implementation of the Affordable Care Act – which was upheld by the Supreme Court decision in King v. Burwell — is one of the YWCA’s top legislative priorities. The YWCA, whose core mission is women’s empowerment and eliminating racism, vehemently opposes any attempts to weaken the ACA, especially those provisions that impact women and their families.
“Nationally, nearly seven million women — half of whom are women of color — were at risk of losing the financial help they need to afford health insurance,” said YWCA USA CEO Dara Richardson-Heron, M.D., “We are relieved that the Supreme Court ruled to protect these tax credits.”
This decision upholds the ACA by allowing all individuals and families who are eligible for subsidies to purchase health care in the federally administered exchanges.
“It really is imperative that Congress and every state fully implement the ACA without further political maneuvering and delays,” Richardson-Heron said. “These provisions will benefit every woman and family in the country.”
The ACA has helped 16 million Americans gain insurance and will continue to do so in the future. People can enroll in health coverage through healthcare.gov during open enrollment season or whenever they have a life-changing event. Those who qualify for Medicaid can enroll year-round.
