YWCA USA opposes the confirmation of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court of the United States. The record, judicial philosophy, and life experience of any Supreme Court justice must clearly demonstrate a commitment to protecting the rights of all Americans, but particularly the people and communities who face the greatest marginalization.
STATEMENT BY CASEY HARDEN, INTERIM CEO OF YWCA USA:
“From the time of his nomination, we have had serious concerns about Judge Gorsuch’s judicial record on issues that impact the women and families we serve. This week’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearings have done nothing to assuage our concerns about his record on reproductive rights, access to contraception, and worker and consumer rights. The hearings instead raised new concerns as Judge Gorsuch evaded direct and simple questions about his views on seminal civil rights cases addressing integration, contraception, and LGBTQ rights. In addition, we believe that Judge Gorsuch’s judicial philosophy is at odds with the principled pragmatism required to make decisions that reflect the needs and demographics of a 21st century United States.
“YWCA is committed to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. We urge the Senate to stand with YWCA and the millions of Americans committed to these values by withholding its consent to Judge Gorsuch’s nomination. ”
