Statement by Casey Harden, Interim CEO of YWCA USA
“Today’s executive order is yet another step in the continuing campaign to undermine women’s access to affordable, quality healthcare that meets their real needs—this time under the guise of promoting free speech and religious liberty. In a shocking attack on women’s reproductive rights, the order undermines the preventive care mandate of the Affordable Care Act and opens the door for employers to block contraceptive coverage and other reproductive health services in employer-sponsored health insurance plans. The order prioritizes an employer’s religious beliefs over the beliefs and medical needs of the women they employ. This order is in addition to the reproductive health care restrictions that are part of the American Health Care Act that passed out of the House of Representatives today.
“These attacks on access to health care are a threat to all, but especially women and communities of color, many of whom cannot afford to pay out of pocket for health services that an employer excludes from coverage. Access to the full range of reproductive health services—including access to contraception—is a foundational component of primary and preventive health care for women. This executive order seeks to deny basic health care to women, and to undermine both their health and their economic security. We are also concerned about the impacts the executive order will have on the LGBTQ community.”
