Statement by Casey Harden, Interim CEO of YWCA USA
“The ban on sanctuary cities signed by Governor Abbott of Texas is a shameful attack on immigrants and their families. The law will clearly promote racial profiling and discrimination against anyone perceived to be an undocumented immigrant. It will promote fear of the police in immigrant communities, resulting in less cooperation due to real concerns they could be targeted, detained, harassed or deported. Even victims of violence could be deterred from reporting crimes or seeking help from the courts or social services.
“YWCA will continue to stand with immigrant communities and offer them the full range of services we provide. In sanctuary cities and throughout the nation, YWCAs provide shelter for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault crisis services, crisis hotlines, job training, affordable childcare development, financial literacy and many other programs. While no two YWCAs are the same and programs vary from community to community, every YWCA is dedicated to eliminating racism. Together, we will continue to speak out against policies like this one.”
