Statement by Casey Harden, Interim CEO of YWCA USA

“We at YWCA USA share the relief that millions across the country feel knowing that they won’t lose the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) critical health care protections. This morning’s Senate vote preserves health care coverage for millions, including the women and girls of color, low-income families, people with pre-existing conditions, domestic violence survivors, and other women and families YWCAs serve throughout the country.”

“This morning’s victory illustrates the incredible power of grassroots advocacy. Phone calls, emails, tweets, visits, and letters from concerned constituents truly made the difference in this fight. We are thankful to Senators who listened and represented their communities – particularly Senators Collins (R-ME) and Murkowski (R-AK) who voted to protect healthcare, showcasing once again the value of women’s leadership, and Senator McCain (R-AZ) who cast an important vote against repealing the ACA. This type of bipartisanship is critical to solving some of our nation’s most challenging issues. As we continue our work for racial justice and gender equity, we urge Congress to prioritize the needs of constituents, particularly those who stand to lose the most from bad policymaking.”

About YWCA USA

YWCA USA is on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women, stand up for social justice, help families, and strengthen communities. We are one of the oldest and largest women’s organizations in the nation, serving over 2 million women, girls, and their families.

YWCA has been at the forefront of the most pressing social movements for more than 150 years — from voting rights to civil rights, from affordable housing to pay equity, from violence prevention to health care reform. Today, we combine programming and advocacy in order to generate institutional change in three key areas: racial justice and civil rights, empowerment and economic advancement of women and girls, and health and safety of women and girls.
